As a speech pathologist, I have the pleasure of working with students who have communication difficulties.
My students with autism have a lot of difficulty with sensory processing, and a safe space for them to relax and calm down will allow us to have effective and productive speech therapy sessions, but also provide a safe place for their teachers to send them if they are having a difficult time.
For my students in the regular education setting, many are working on communication skills so that they will be able to communicate effectively for school projects, job interviews, and other real life situations. I love the idea of being able to work on their skills in a very comfortable, casual space that will make them more willing to share and participate.
As a teacher, it is impossible to know what my students have or experience once they leave my classroom. I would love to be able to provide all of my students with a comfortable safe haven in my classroom!
