A famous Chinese proverb once stated, “Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere.” In my classroom of 18 very active kindergarten students, learning sometimes follows them out of their seats and into trouble. Flexible seating will encourage healthy safe movement within a designated space. Students will be able to rock, bounce, and wobble which could possibly eliminate the desire to climb. This type of seating will provide them a sense of choice in their learning environment, enhancing physical strength, building community, and promoting collaboration. The healthy movements provided by flexible seating will increase oxygen to the brain boosting academic performance. To make this project possible and help my students with sensory issues, I respectfully request assistance in acquiring flexible seating options to replace my large armchairs and other current furnishings.
The bouncy bands will be used during our full group lessons where my special needs students require extra movement. The bands will provide them safe rocking, bouncing, motions that do not distract other students. Providing an alternative range of motion for students attempting to climb and wander about we can reclaim valuable lesson time benefiting everyone. We will use the reclining stadium seats, the cushions, and the Bitty Bottom cushion to relax as we collaborate and build community during reading stations.
