My students come from a variety of situations and backgrounds; we are an Alternative Education school. Typically, my kids come to me with a lot of negative emotions about school and classrooms. Their anxiety, doubt, and affective filters are high. We are a Title I school with 100% of our students qualify to receive free or reduced price lunch. 20-30% of my kids are homeless or have a stressful home life.
So, to help them ease the tensions they can bring with them so they are more comfortable and open in a learning environment, I am working on getting flexible seating and making the classroom feel less sterile. I am requesting ball chair stools, bean bag chairs, office chairs and two coffee tables.
The more comfortable my students are and the more choice they have, the more they are willing to work. Also, having a positive association with school will improve attendance.
