We now live in the age of technology and the majority of my students are engaged by use of technology. My students have access to Chromebooks during the day, but they have limited capability to help students with more significant needs.
Incorporating technology into the educational environment is exciting and motivating for my students. An iPad would enhance my students' ability to communicate in the educational setting. They can use a voice generating app to communicate with teachers/staff and peers through use of pictures and symbols. During community-based instruction, the students can use the iPad to communicate with people outside of the school building, extending the learning/education to the greater community. Touch screen technology also assists students with limited mobility and fine motor skills issues when writing/typing isn't an effective way to communicate. Technology can also be used to work on behavior as students earn time with an iPad and the various educational apps it provides. All apps would be educationally based to enhance expressive and receptive language skills. My students are excited to learn new skills and are extremely motivated by the use of technology. It would be an amazing opportunity if I can bring the use of technology into the speech - language therapy setting to work on speech and language.
