My students struggle with reading. For almost all of them, it is not because they lack the skills. They know what sounds the letters make, but they lack the fluency. Grade level texts are difficult to read, but they can still comprehend it! These chapter books will allow my students to read a long story they comprehend with words they can read independently.
They need to develop their fluency and low reading skills without lowering the comprehension level needed for the readings.
The plan is for students to be taught or use already learned decoding skills and practice them in books that appear to be grade level and are more interesting for their age range. Using these stories in lessons instead of other leveled readers will let students practice the lower skills they need while continuing their comprehensions skills that are closer to grade level.
