About a quarter of my students are typical third grade readers, but many had little opportunity to read during the pandemic. Few have access to books at home.
Most need the support of illustrations and small chunks of text to intrigue them and keep them working on recognizing words and understanding what they read.
These high interest early readers, many by BIPOC authors and illustrators, will encourage my students to do the work of reading to understand themselves and their world. They will be thrilled to read and discuss these books with their peers.
