I focused on a vareity of books for my special education students, to help create and cultivate a love for reading!
I chose books that will foster a cultural connection for my students, all of whom come from very diverse backgrounds. I chose books about Hispanic culture, Middle Eastern culture, African American culture and Native American culture to diversify my current library that I have in my special education room.
Some other books I chose teach social and emotional skills such as confidence, acceptance, courage, kindness, and self control, that many of my students are working towards in their IEP goals and in the classroom. I can use these books in specific lessons on social and emotional learning, or for my students to read on their own when they are having a bad day or need to spend some time processing their feelings in our calming corner.
I also added some fun holiday read alouds that allow me to push-in to the general education class and read to the whole class, which helps foster the idea that I am not just a teacher for "my" students, but to all the students I see every day, and can make the students I do pull out feel more apart of the class as a whole.
