I teach 2nd grade at an all African American boys prep school. The STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) is taught through the lens of African-American history, culture, and culturally responsive teaching and learning strategies. These books will help the student to be able to see themselves in the books and in their learning. I will use these books at the beginning of the morning to teach Social Emotional Learning. That way I ensure that all students are on the same page going to school. Most of the books I chose will enhance their learning by being able to feel comfortable with their well-being. Having these books will allow students to have a deeper level of understanding of their culture. I want these books to inspire my boys that they can be anything they want to be. It's hard being a boy of color in the world today and I want my students to succeed. I want them to be able to read the books and respond to their reading. I just want to create a classroom that welcomes all and passes no judgment on anyone.
