My classroom is very sparse and doesn't really have any decor. Many of my students have commented on how empty and barren it seems. I also have many students who are part of the LGBTQ+ community or students of color who I know feel unwelcome in my school and community. As an ally, I want them to know that they are welcome in my classroom and that this is a space that they are free to express themselves. Most of my students know this now that they have had time to get to know me, but when they first came into my classroom there was nothing to indicate that I would welcome them and their identities. I want anyone who walks into my room to immediately know that they are welcome. I also want my students to feel at home, to walk into my room and feel at ease. I try to keep things like pads, lotion, food and drinks, tea and coffee, etc. available for students who may need it, but as a first year teacher, I am simply unable to afford all the things I need to realize my vision.
