We will use these materials in the classroom to help connect their learning experiences to those in the novel, Esperanza Rising, which we are currently reading. These materials will be used to make yarn dolls like the one in our story. Each scholar will also use the cross stitch materials to create a stitching to take home with them as an end of unit project. This project will serve as a culminating event. They will refer to metaphors found throughout our text and make the connections. The goal is to experience and better understand the metaphor of “Mountains and valleys” as well as not being afraid to start over.
