Knowing and using the science and engineering process is essential for all learners in order to be capable thinkers and active participants outside of school. It teaches critical thinking, effective concise communication, along with creative problem solving.
Within my own classroom I do this through engineering project based learning projects using 3D printing which require students to utilize knowledge in multiple subject areas to solve problems, either student or teacher directed.
In 7th grade, this is done with students designing and developing race cars which are balloon powered. Students 3D model, then print, test, and refine their cars with the goal that it will go 15 meters. Through this they learn to analyze speed, velocity, and forces; along with data analysis, and graphing. Within 8th grade, students participate in a dragon breeding activity which shows genetic inheritance. Students determine the genotype and phenotype of each generation of dragon, with the final designed using 3D modeling and then printed so we can analyze and discuss the population genetics.
