Many of my students have trouble regulating their sensory systems which makes it difficult for them to focus on tasks and communicate. Kids with sensory processing issues often seek (or avoid) sensory input. Kids who seek input (squeezing, pulling, pushing, jumping) can help them calm their body and make them feel more oriented in space. Heavy work activities activate as many muscles and joints as possible at the same time. Without heavy work activities, students may seek input by crashing into or jumping off things or in other unsafe ways. When kids do heavy work throughout the day, it can help them feel more organized, focused and calm thus enabling them to be in a better mindset to stay on task and learn.
