Great books have the power to serve as windows and mirrors into the lives of all children.
This project will provide the students in my class with hard copies of the novel Front Desk by Kelly Yang to be used in our novel study unit.
This novel centers diverse voices and experiences, and touches on several themes - justice, inequality, perseverance, teamwork, and family being among the most salient. We will use this novel as a springboard to discuss these themes and what it means to be a community member and an ally in the face of prejudice and discrimination.
Having access to hard copies of the novel greatly supports my students' motivation and enthusiasm about reading and learning. Being able to hold an actual book rather than merely listening to it aloud or through a computer screen will allow them to activate deeper meaning and understanding as readers. The shared experience of reading this moving story will also facilitate learning and application of grade-level language standards.
