My math students not only lost math instruction during COVID but they also lost their motivation to want to learn math. Transitioning from online school back to in-person has been difficult for many of my students, especially my students who were performing below grade level prior to the pandemic. The inequity of resources during distance learning only widened the gap of my low and high achieving students.
COVID also took a toll on the mental health and social skills of my students. Being out of the typical classroom environment was detrimental to my students who rely on the structure, predictability and safety of our school.
The Scholastic Math magazines will give my students an opportunity to build their math skills in a fun and interesting way. The print copies will be helpful in-person at school while the online version will provide an additional resource to help our students who are excluded due to COVID exposure or diagnosis.
