I work with 6th graders in a district where students do have much to spare. What I have found is that my students, year after year, impress and inspire me to do better each and every day. I make it my priority to create an engaging environment with resources that give students the freedom to explore, think, and create! I want to bring in stories from around the world will help engage students while broadening their experiences with communities near and far. I would like to fill my classroom with current and classic novels, biographies of people who mean something to young middle school students such as, Selena, Pelé, Venus and Serena Williams, as well as Charlie Chaplin and Stevie Wonder. I also want to bring stories to them about children their age that have faced struggles and life-altering experiences such as Malala or Sudanese refugees. Engaging fictional characters such as, Brown Girl Dreaming, Awkward, or Jerry Spinelli’s Wringer will bring stories to students’ lives that opens a world different than their own as well as stories who have characters comparable to themselves.
