My students and I are in a small room and one of the computer programs they use requires them to listen to directions. It is hard for them to listen to the direction and work on the problem with the volume very low especially when they are all working at a different pace.
Having headphones allows them to work individually without the distraction of the other students volume from their computers. It also gives them confidence that they could repeat the directions or have the question read to them without having the other students knowing what they are doing.
The computer also has them try the problem again and they won't be embarrassed if the computer tells them they have the answer incorrect and to try again.
