Since my 3rd grade students have had typical school experiences stripped away from them, they have a deep need of social-emotional support. Therefore, we have a great emphasis on SEL learning in the classroom.
One of the major difficulties these students have is identifying their emotions, recognizing when they are starting to arise, and how to deal with those emotions. So, this year we have read a "Little Spot" book every week and have dedicated that week to a particular emotion and how we can recognize it, identify it, and bring us back to a peaceful state. These "Little Spot" books by Diane Alber are a huge hit and success in my classroom. The students love them and learn so much from them!
The books spark deep and personal conversations in my room and have helped my students grow emotionally. However, as a first year teacher, I do not own any of these books! Luckily, there are many generous people on Youtube who read them aloud. Although my students enjoy the stories, they have stated time and time again that they wish I could read them aloud. My students and I have great relationships. Therefore, I understand why they would want me to personally read these books to them, especially when they lead to such deep and personal conversations.
So, help my 3rd grade class out by providing us The Little Spot books so that we can take our personal conversations about feelings and emotions to an even deeper level! We appreciate any help we can get, and this will fill our Little Thankful Spot!
