Students struggle with understanding how the environment and ecology impact the very things they may eat. Dissecting an owl pellet would provide a hands-on experience of what owls have eaten in the ecosystem they live in, and my students will discover the parts the owls cannot digest.
My students will not only discover what an owl digest, but they will also experience a puzzle of animal bones that they will put together to identify just what is in their owl's diet. This experience allows them to apply what they have learned about how organisms get their energy from other organisms in their environment, which is an important part of ecology.
