My scholars and I start each day with a "Morning Meeting." During this time, we do an emotional check in. The students are able to name their feelings and help each other with strategies for coping. We have used many different tools that help the students talk about feelings and situations where children are dealing with life's challenges; this may be cultural, racial, social-emotional, or other. Through it all, we focus on being "real", being open, being safe, being supportive, and being optimistic through the "power of yet."
Yet, my students still need resources to help manage their emotions, to see other children who look like them, reflecting the beautiful cultural diversity that exists in our community and our classroom.
These materials, Ninja Life Hack books, are amazing in making true feelings and emotions manageable to young students. And, they reflect the diversity of my classroom which we celebrate daily!
