Trauma lives in the body. When children and teens are traumatized, the body becomes an unsafe place and we become afraid of physical sensations, which affects how we breathe, the ways we relate, and how we move through the world. More than two-thirds of youth report at least one traumatic event by age 16, and post-traumatic stress can affect our mental and physical health for years after the event.
Trauma-informed yoga can help us to befriend our bodies again. The practice provides a container for feeling sensations and developing a sense of safety in the body—recentering the breath, rebuilding healthy relationships, and reconnecting to mindful movement. By sharing yoga practices with youth who have experienced trauma, we support them with tools that directly address the symptoms of trauma and help to mitigate both its short- and long-term effects.
