There are studies that have proven our brains cannot learn if we are anxious, stressed, overwhelmed, or angry. In our school, we have many students who can get very escalated and require a safe space to calm down.
Together, we are building our own brain break area in the classroom. In this space, students will be able to take a break and use some tools to help them calm down. We have learned about our brains and how taking a break is necessary. Using the timers will allow students to break quickly and not become too off task. Students have requested these items to help them calm down when they are feeling escalated. Once we have received the items, we will organize a corner in the room that has already been determined. In this space, we are including a couch from our classroom and shelves that will be filled with the items. Before using this space we will use lessons to teach students how to use the tools appropriately and effectively.
Students deserve to feel safe and heard in the class. We are hoping that with this space, students will feel more successful in our classroom.
