As a new teacher this year, I've been pulling a lot of my teaching methods from my past mentors, obviously. It was during my final semester of student teaching that my mentor introduced me to the "desk pet reward system". I loved it so much, that I couldn't wait to do it with my own students one day. Little did I know I would be hired later that year at a different Manchester school!
Since I've started at Green Acres in December, I've implemented a point system. Students have the chance to earn points throughout the day by being on task, helping friends, being good role models, etc. They get to physically mark their points, which gives them a chance to feel proud of their work. Once they reach 5 points, they get to choose their very own desk pet!
The 3D eraser pet is kept in it's own private "habitat" case and given a name. The students can decorate the habitat however they want. As the year goes on, and they earn more points, they unlock subsequent rewards to keep in their habitat. For example, at 10 points they can choose a fruit or vegetable eraser for their pet or a seasonal reward if a holiday is coming up!
