My students are ravenous for, and devour, good books. My classroom library is a place for my freshmen and sophomores to get lost in a book, to find something to pull them away from the trials and tribulations of being a teenager during these difficult times, and to whisk them away to a different time or place. My students are thankful for the opportunity to read diverse texts, and treat our books with love and care. It makes my heart soar to hear my sweet students sharing recommendations from the classroom library.
The books I've chosen have been selected with my students in mind. I have chosen "mirror texts" for them to see themselves in, and "window texts" for them to see outside places, cultures, and people. I have observed my students choose books and have asked them what types of books they want to see in the classroom. I am excited and hopeful that the funding of this project will allow my students to continue to grow as readers, writers, and learners.
