Each of our students participating in this project are special education students. They all strive to be more social but lack the necessary skills needed. We want to incorporate more lessons that specifically target social emotional learning for our students. The students will be following district social emotional learning curriculum. We will focus on skills that will develop better mental health, academic achievement, and teach the students how to create and maintain healthy relationships with peers. In this project we want to create an inviting space for our students to be able to gather and attend weekly meetings. Each meeting will be prepared with students needs in mind. A different topic will be presented each week. In these meetings students will be able to be a part of a small group discussion and will be encouraged to participate and practice the skills learned with each other.
Through these lessons they will develop those skills such as, self-awareness, social-awareness, self-management, responsible decision making, and relationship skills. They will also keep a portfolio to assess their progress over time.
