I would like to create a book club style read of "The Hate U Give" by Angie Thomas. My students frequently struggle to read, write and process concepts in the English language though many are dual or multilingual. The materials used are frequently boring and repetitive in nature. I would like to afford them the opportunity to explore contemporary literature that addresses many social issues they may have encountered themselves as new members of our community. I aim to share this resource with our Students of Color Association on campus and other groups that value diversity and truth in history.
My students in the English Language Learner program hold many diverse world views and sometimes struggle to understand what is happening around them in this country. I would like to give them the opportunity to use a very beautiful book about a rather difficult concept to not only process the world they live in, but support their English learning by presenting them with a the challenge of reading a book from cover to cover. I aim to support them by reading out loud, and processing the material via NoRedInk that has a wonderful companion curriculum to go with it.
