We will read this novel over the course of several weeks in class. The book will be the foundation and inspiration for our language learning. The novel is a shared experience that we can discuss and write about. We will scaffold the reading to gradually increase student responsibility. I will read the first few chapters together with students so that I can guide them at first. Then, students will read chapters in small groups, and eventually, they will read chapters on their own.
With each chapter, students will practice all modes of communication- reading, writing, listening, and speaking. We will vary our activities, but here are some examples:
-Character Descriptions
-Read and Draw
-Comprehension Questions
-Summarizing & Retelling Practice
-Role Play Reenactments
-Guessing at what will happen in the next chapter
-Writing a New/Different Ending
I hope that this novel will give students confidence in their language abilities from their first experience in Spanish class.
