I work as a teacher in a self-contained class. My students have various syndromes and multiple disabilities. They have cognitive impairments, developmental delays and have difficulty focusing and maintaining their attention to task. Despite their limitations, we work through a multimodal approach to learning with constant repetition. These materials will give them an opportunity to learn through another venue.
Multimodal and hands-on learning through art and dramatic play have shown to be an extremely effective way of teaching academic and social emotional skills.
My students will learn their ELA, mathematics, and social/emotional skills through creating art and drama together. They will be motivated to interact with each other and create creative ways to build on the skills that we are focusing on. When the work is meaningful the children focus better and retain their knowledge.
