In middle school, students are introduced to the fundamentals of microbiology. There is so much interesting content to cover, but because the things we will be discussing are invisible to the naked eye, some of those concepts can seem too abstract for some, and diagrams can only do so much. An incubator to grow cultures would go a long way in making the abstract much more concrete.
Students will have the opportunity to see and learn firsthand about things such as the importance of hygiene and handwashing, the veracity of the "three-second rule," cross-contamination, and more!
My students love the hands-on experiences science has to offer. For many of them, this is their first and only opportunity to have these experiences. This incubator will go a long way in making an interesting unit, exciting, and teaching my students that we are always surrounded by life, even if we cannot see it.
