My classroom is made up of 100% students of color who come from low income communities. Half of my class is reading a year to 2 years behind grade level. One of the best ways to increase student reading levels is to practice reading as much as possible. Unfortunately, most of my books have been donated by previous teachers so they are outdated, irrelevant, and destroyed.
My students deserve quality books with characters that represent them and the real world realities they face.
With these new titles, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their own grade level. It is important that I give my students access to new and engaging books to increase excitement for reading and decrease frustration.
