These tools will be essential for my students to grasp the concept of numbers. The young learner needs to be able to manipulate objects to build number sense. Both the Rekenrek and the ten frames will help my students manipulate the beads or dots to show different parts of a whole number leading them to add and subtract successfully. For example, Can you build a way to make 7? (5 beads+2 beads or 3 beads +4 beads) They can act out story problems by moving the beads to represent the operations in the story. There were 6 penguins on an iceberg. Three penguins swim away. How many Penguins are left? They can be used to build teen numbers to show 10 plus some more. These tools will help my students build a concrete understanding of number sense to better prepare them to move to more abstract math with symbols and equations. The laminator is a must for quick jobs as we no longer can personally use our school laminator.
