Reading and language are one of the MOST important skills anyone can have. Showing our youngest students that reading is not only interesting but FUN sets the stage for a LIFETIME of reading and learning. While our curriculum has an array of books for formal lessons, studies have shown over and over again that informal reading has a greater effect on reading skills and interest.
The best part of being a pre-k teacher is setting the stage for a lifetime of loving education; formal and not. Having a high quality classroom library for all of my students includes furniture that is inviting and comfortable, books that are not only interesting to preschoolers but are also rich with people who look and speak like them, and an array of types of books (picture books, fiction books, multi-lingual books, research books, etc).
Providing students with a love of reading will spread to their homes and offer an opportunity for siblings, parents, grandparents to get excited about reading as well.
