Children want to feel like they're a part of a community, which is why I want various games, crafts, and books they can access to provide them with opportunities to engage positively with their peers. Additionally, there are resources I can read to my students to help them with the mental health challenges they are facing. Everything I picked is for my students so they feel like their teacher, and their classmates, care about them.
All of the resources I have requested will help my students foster relationships with one another to create a sense of family, belonging, and inclusivity in my classroom. For students who need friendship, I chose games that put them in partnerships or groups so they can be inclusive of others. For students who feel like a minority, I chose books where they'll feel represented in the classroom. For students who struggle with mental health challenges, I chose books to give them additional support and empathy for their situation. I found space posters and tools to excite my students' various passions and hobbies. I considered a vacuum to keep our classroom sanitary for students who live in unfortunate living conditions. I chose everything with a specific purpose - how can I reach all the students in my classroom so they want to be here.
I strongly believe that students struggle with learning when they don't feel supported emotionally and academically. I strive to give my students the emotional and academic support they deserve. I believe that I've accomplished my goal as a teacher if my students leave my classroom knowing they have a lifelong friend they can always turn to - whenever they need it. My hope is that they feel like I am their lifelong friend, in addition to other peers in their class.
