Providing a calm down "kit" to use in a space in each classroom, and supplies to use in the counselor's room, designated for students to take a break when emotions are running high, will allow students the opportunity to self-regulate. Having items such as mindfulness books and tools, fidget tools, and sensory items in a space to assist them with regrouping and calming down for a short time so they can return to learning with the class less stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed, and better able to focus, will benefit them and those around them. Examples are purposeful breathing through the help of guided breathing prompts in the designated space, progressive muscle relaxation with stress balls or PlayDoh, and mindfulness practices using sensory items. All with the purpose of helping students calm down when stress levels or emotions are high.
