My 3rd grade students this year are identified with emotional disturbances, so my class is considered an Emotional Support classroom. They struggle to cope in day-to-day situations and their behaviors can often escalate many times per day. I am in the process of creating a “Calm Down Corner” where my students can go to relax, recoup, and use their imaginations to get themselves back on the right track in order to return to their academic schedule. My students would benefit tremendously from having a flexible seating couch in this special area; the open-ended play opportunities and the calming, coziness a couch provides is something that would help my Emotional Support students in their daily schedule, assisting them in channeling their negative behaviors into positive ones for optimal success in the classroom and beyond.
