Research shows that reluctant readers are drawn to graphic novels because they help them visualize the characters and plot of the story. I call these graphic novels the "gateway" to more difficult chapter books. I have had students read the graphic novel and then look for the real book that it was based on.
Students don't want to read an old yellowed book that is falling apart. They want a new book with a colorful cover that catches their attention. The benefit of having a classroom library is to encourage students to read. I let my students check out books to read at home or for their English class.
Every Friday is a reading day, and most of my students don't have books at home. They need to have options in my classroom that are new releases and engaging. It is easy to convince students to read a book that is related to a movie they have seen or a popular book that their friends are reading.
