I am very excited about getting my Spanish students reading these books. I think that students will be highly motivated to continue learning Spanish if they are able to read a whole novel by the end of Spanish 1. These books are specifically meant to challenge level 1 and 2 Spanish students, while still being at a level that they can read and understand.
Perhaps more importantly, these novels have Latinx protagonists or are set in a Latin American country, giving students the opportunity to learn about Latino culture and letting them see the world through a different lens. I think that the most important thing that a student can come out of my class with is greater knowledge, understanding and empathy for people from different countries and cultures than them. The population of our school is very predominantly white, but the world is not. I want to give my students the opportunity to experience part of another culture, and books are a great way to explore experiences that are different to their own.
Finally, I have added some accessories for my yearbook class that will make it much easier for us to capture and use pictures showing the beautiful, unique school that I am lucky to teach at.
