Teaching students how to use a calculator, helps increase their confidence and self-esteem for passing their 7th and 8th grade math classes. Working with fractions, exponents, long divisions and square roots no longer seems as scary. Calculators can be checked out and used at home when needed. While being pulled into the special education room for instructional time, a small portion of time will be used each day to teach the functions of the calculator. Teaching them how to use the calculator will begin with out 6th graders even though they can't use a calculator in their classes or on their end of the year test but we would like to get a head start.
