Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, my students have never had a "normal" school year. They are struggling to catch up on essential content missed at the end of Kindergarten and throughout 1st grade. It is crucial that I provide every resource I can to support their academic growth during this school year.
Because of my students' school experience thus far, they are faced with unique behavioral and academic needs. The resources I have selected will increase engagement with learning activities focused on their most pressing academic needs. For example, whiteboards to practice proper letter formation, math manipulatives to reinforce operation fluency, and literacy activities to practice phonics skills in high-frequency words. My project also includes sets of decodable readers that will support my students who are working hard to become independent readers.
In addition, the resources I have selected will support my students' social-emotional well-being as I strive to make our classroom and safe and happy environment for these students who may not have that experience in other places in their lives. Because of their unique life experiences, many of my students crave stable, predictable routines. Organizational tools, such as an easel, timer, and writing caddy, will improve the functionality and predictability of writing and centers time. Building activities will foster social skills such as teamwork, and provide engaging and rewarding activities for them to explore during inside recess or brain breaks.
