The materials requested herein will be used to create a unit about tactile arts from various cultures. While traditional European arts embrace painting, marble sculptures, and some drawings, it ignores many of the other ways of making art. We will be learning to weave using looms and yarn. We will also compare Navaho, Guatemala, Peru, and Kente weaving patterns and methods. This project will allow us to look beyond the dominant culture of our country and learn from others around the world. The mosaic materials will be used to study art from the Middle East. The clay will be used to explore functional art making and it's relation to crafting.
COVID-19 may have isolated us, but through this project we will be reaching out to the world and discovering the knowledge beyond our own borders. Additionally, we will be focusing on how tactile arts can be used as a form of meditation and healing. These projects have been chosen for their potential to expand our minds and to heal our wounds.
