In 5th grade, one of the main science strands, is Cycling of Matter in Ecosystems. One big part of this strand is learning about plants and photosynthesis and how plants fit into food webs and ecosystems. The hydroponics system will imitate the sun which will enable the students to see plant growth right in the classroom. Having several small hydroponics kits, will enable each student to work in small groups and even allow each student to grow their own plant in the hydroponics kit. My students will be able to graph and record the changes many times throughout the unit. These items will be able to be used for many years.
