We strongly emphasize increasing literacy over the next few years in all our students, but especially in our multilingual learners. Including more representative and diverse literature in my classroom library and providing at least 15 minutes of free choice read every day will help toward that goal. Students need to see media that represents them. So I made most of the book selections to increase our library, focusing on representation. The others are more visual for diverse learners. By increasing the library in my classroom, I communicate to my students that reading matters. Selecting books that represent diverse populations tells the students that those communities matter.
