During the period of time where my school shut down, kids were away from school, and despite teachers best effort to reach students, some did not receive any form of educational instruction for nearly 5 months. When students returned to school in Fall 2020, we were dealing with closing the gaps of educational instruction that was missed during the shutdown, but also the reduction in educational stamina. My students lost focus faster, had more instances of distraction, and struggled to have a desire to be at school and want to learn.
Incorporating tablets into the classroom setting through educational apps and a way to diversify teaching approaches will help students be more interested and excited in what they are working on. As teachers, we are competing with screens and the latest trendy games constantly, our students are always connected. While I will not use these tablets to replace my instruction, I will use them to enhance my instruction and promote student engagement by utilizing tools and resources they already find interesting and relevant to their lives.
Tablet apps and games are a great way to promote fact fluency in math, enhance reading comprehension, practice reading fluency skills and phonetic development. I think these tablets will not only help students achieve their individual educational goals, but it will also show them that learning can be fun and interesting.
