Bringing current novels to my middle school students that reflect their identity and experience will allow them to engage in meaning making and empathy building. Too often students are tasked with reading materials that are not suited to validate and affirm the multicultural and multilingual world we live in. Proving children with the opportunity to view the world trough a fictional character who experiences coming of age in a diverse setting reflects the lives of our students and allows them to understand that the human experience provides common ground regardless of background or identity.
