Let's be real: teaching a journalism class without materials isn't impossible, but it is certainly difficult to create a broadcast or conduct an interview without a camcorder or a recording device. My students are so ready to go beyond reading and writing articles and watching news videos. We anticipate doing our own broadcasting, conducting live interviews, and presenting our own ideas, news, and events to our school and community.
With a camcorder, my students can create their own news shows, broadcast school activities, publish information to school social media platforms, and maybe even put out some blogs or YouTube videos. With a quality recorder, we can capture interviews with those who have experiences the students have never even dreamed of. I am looking to impact my students in ways they have not yet imagined.
I need some great books for me and my students that explain the ethics of journalism, and how to be responsible, clear, and truthful in reporting. Students hear and watch media full of spins and misinformation. They must learn to understand these traps and how to avoid them while creating and reporting valid information.
