My project involves books that my students have shown an intense interest in reading. I’ve found students respond best to shorter, high-interest graphic novels. They have overwhelmingly been drawn to the manga genre due to its relevant plot lines, depth of character relationships, and readability. I’d use these texts to help bridge the gap from where their reading level currently is to where it should be. Students can use these texts to analyze foundational themes of literature in an accessible fashion, which will make tackling more advanced texts less problematic.
