Students have set gutsy goals to improve in reading and math. We have focused on things that are measurable so that they can monitor their own progress and easily see growth. Setting their own goals gives them ownership of mastering the standards. Doing this themselves also provides them with the opportunity to see progress, hold themselves accountable, and build self-esteem as they see their growth.
These tools will help them build fluency in reading and math facts, which are absolutely necessary to progress in those academic areas. Timing their speed for math fluency helps with the automaticity necessary to do the harder problems they are building towards. Having whiteboards to use for practice and a fun grading station with cool pens will really help to engage them in the practice. Recording their reading, listening to themselves, and seeing their reading fluency progress is also a great motivator. The headphones with the microphone will help block out the extraneous classroom noise and let them and the computer focus on their voice.
Working with partners to improve their fluency is an added bonus and promotes cooperation and social skills. Working together using the flashcards helps build our community and the skills they need. These supplies will build community, mastery, and self-esteem in my students.
