I have a small library that I inherited from the teacher who retired. She always let the children take responsibility of the books by taking care of them and have the opportunity to take them home to read. The smile and reaction of disbelieve when they find out they can take them home to read is priceless. Most of them don't have books at home or they haven't been trusted in that manner before. They do not take this lightly and step up to the responsibility. They indeed do take them home to read and return them as soon as they are done. They absolutely love being able to do this.
Since the beginning of the school year, I have already seen ninety percent of my students increase in their reading level just by actively reading. Their reading comprehension has increased and their test scores. Reading is in every subject in school and is very valuable in life. I tell them all the time that reading grows their minds and that it's the brain's exercise. They understand that and want to be successful. They have a hunger for reading and have been asking me for these particular books, so we would all be extremely grateful for the benevolent donor that is able to help us.
