We study soil erosion with hands-on sessions to allow students to see both how water moves soils and how soil can be shaped to reduce and control erosion. Hands-on learning in groups gives all the students a chance to fully particpate in the experiment and try out their ideas for controlling erosion. Multiple stream tables and accurate scales allow students to work effectively together. We also learn about how damage from sudden floods and storms (from volcanoes and hurricanes, for example) disrupts ecosystems and how this can be mitigated and repaired.
