Art has always been an escape and source of catharsis for my students, and this has especially been true throughout the challenges of the pandemic. Drawing helps students focus and calm their minds. Creating art also allows them to explore and express important things in their life, from their personal experiences and frustrations to their goals and aspirations. Students love having the opportunity to create something meaningful with their art.
My students LOVE to try new materials, and they especially enjoy being able to use bright, rich colors in their drawings. I want to make sure they have good quality drawing materials to create their artwork with. Many students cannot afford to buy high quality materials on their own, and unless they know how to use them, those materials may not seem like a worthy investment at first. However, once students have been given the opportunity to use those materials, many of them make it a goal to get their own drawing tools and continue progressing as an artist at home.
Having extra sets of Prismacolor colored pencils and other drawing tools allows students to use these materials in class, and to check them out to be used at home. This is especially helpful for students who are quarantined or otherwise unable to come to school for long periods of time. Having access to materials at home makes completing their academic assignments easier, but it also gives them a creative escape from the pressures and stress they are experiencing in everyday life. They love being able to create bright, beautiful, expressive artwork with high-quality tools.
