I want to give my students many different art opportunities within our Mexico unit to create meaningful art. I work with K-5 grades and I want to give each grade level a unique art exploration culminating in a fiesta celebration for the end of the year.
Art is a language that can express feelings, experiences, and can also be the vehicle that recontextualizes academic concepts and standards. Kindergarteners and first graders will create sombreros and serapes as they study the culture and traditions of Mexico. Second graders will paint Mexican guitars and maracas. Third graders will make Mexican tiles using printmaking. Fourth graders will make paper mâché piñatas, and fifth graders will weave saddle blankets on alpacas. All grades will contribute to a mural depicting the landscape and cityscapes of Mexico. Students will learn about all the contributions Mexico has made to the world.
As part of our fiesta, we will learn and perform the Mexican hat dance. We will also break a piñata, play our maracas along with a Mariachi band recording, and take an art walk around our school to view and enjoy each grades' contribution to our art exhibit. ¡Viva México!
